Introduction of Different Types of Turning Tools

A lathe is a machine that turns a rotating work piece with a turning tool.

Turning tool is a cutting tool used for CNC turning pins.

Turning tools are used on various lathes for machining external cylindrical, bottom cutting, knurling, drilling, end face, boring,

The working part of the turning tool is the part that generates and processes the chips, including the structure of the cutting edge breaking or rolling up the chips.

This article will introduce the knowledge of different types of lathe tools.

Because different operations require different types of turning tools,

Turning tools are divided into rough turning tools and fine turning tools.

Coarse turning tools are used to remove large quantities of metal in the shortest possible time and at a clear cutting angle to withstand maximum cutting forces

Fine turning tools are used to remove small amounts of metal, and the cutting angles are also sharpened to produce a very smooth and precise surface.

A chamfering tool can be defined as a tool used to design bevels or grooves on a bolt that chamfers the corners of a workpiece, and when a lot of chamfering work is required, a specific chamfering tool with a side chamfer angle is required.

For shoulder tools, beveled steps can be used to turn the edge angle and zero tip radius with a straight turning tool with side cutting, and the radius of the corner of the workpiece can be turned by a straight tool with a straight tool turning tip radius corresponding to the radius of the workpiece.

The thread tool material is mainly made of high-speed steel and cemented carbide, which has good versatility and is suitable for small and medium-sized batches and single thread processing. The thread turning tool belongs to the forming tool, and the cutting edge of the turning edge must be a straight cutting edge, which requires a sharp edge without chipping and a small surface roughness.

A face tool can be defined as a tool used to cut a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the workpiece, and it is used to reduce the length of the workpiece by providing a perpendicular axis to the axis of the lathe.

A grooving tool is basically defined as a tool used to make a narrow cavity of a certain depth on the conical cylinder or surface of a part, and the specific shape of the grooving tool is selected according to whether the groove cut on the edge is square or round, etc.

A forming tool can be defined as a tool forming tool used to manufacture different types of workpiece shapes, which can free up tool position and reduce machining cycle times by machining all or most of the groove shape in a single plunge.

The flat dovetail forming tool has a wide cutting edge and the dovetail end is mounted on a special turret to wash the workpiece

Boring tools, boring is suitable for lathe tools that enlarge holes, when you want to enlarge an existing hole you need to use a boring bar, the boring bar can be easily drilled into the already drilled hole and expand its diameter, it can be quickly reamed and processed to the right size to fit other components correctly.

A counterboring cutter, which can be defined as a tool used to enlarge and position the sleeve head of a screw or bolt,

Cutting tool, the cutting edge at the front end of the cutting cutter is the main cutting edge, and the cutting edge on both sides of the cutting edge is the secondary cutting edge, which is suitable for cutting high carbon steel, tool steel, and can also be used for cutting off high speed steel,

In the process of compiling CNC programs, programmers must be familiar with the selection method of tools and the principle of determining the amount of cutting, so as to ensure the processing quality and processing efficiency of parts, and give full play to the advantages of CNC lathes.
